The Atlantic bluefin tuna is within the top 10
fastest ocean fish in the world reaching an average speed of 44 mph which provides
for a fun fight if hooked. Heavily fished commercially and locally, bluefin
tuna is very popular for anyone who loves fishing almost anywhere in the world.
Their diets consist mainly of small fish, but they will also consume some
crustaceans and squid. They grow to an average of 7 feet long and 500 pounds,
but can grow as long as 12 feet and weigh over 1,000 pounds in rare occasions.
They are capable of diving 3,000 feet, so if you want to catch one you will
have to travel well offshore. Tuna have tremendous muscular strength, so be
ready for a fight when you hook one! The season for Atlantic bluefin tuna is November-March.Trolling 2-4 lines with 80 lb. tackle until the school of fish is located works well. Once you hook a fish, it is a good idea to chunk menheden to keep the school around the boat.
